The English name of dimethylformamide is N, N-dimethylformamide, or DMF for short.

DMF is an important organic chemical raw material and excellent non-protonic polar organic solvent. DMF has stable chemical properties, high boiling point and flash point, and low toxicity. It can be mixed with water, ether, ethanol, kerosene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, aromatics and most organic solvents, and can dissolve polymers such as ethyl cellulose, nitrocellulose, butyl acetate cellulose, polyacrylonitrile, vinyl chloride, polyvinyl chloride, etc. under normal temperature, which is called an all-purpose solvent. It is widely used in leather, fiber, medicine, petrochemical, electronics, dyes, coatings, metal processing and other fields. Its main uses are as follows:

(1) Important chemical raw materials

DMF can be used to synthesize amines, amides, ethers, aldehydes, nitriles, peptides and halogenated, heterocyclic and phosphorus-containing compounds, and can also be used in the production of drugs such as cortisone, chlorpheniramine, doxycycline, vitamin B6, and Qunaojin.

(2) Catalyst for chemical reaction

(3) Solvent for wet polyurethane synthetic leather

(4) Solvent for dry spinning of polyacrylonitrile to acrylic and synthetic fibers

(5) Used as extractant for separation of substances

Because DMF can selectively absorb hydrocarbons, DMF is used as an extractant to extract butadiene from ethylene cracking gas C4 in the petrochemical industry.

(6) Synthetic resin and polymerization

A. DMF is an excellent binder for coating, film and fiber;

B. DMF can be used as polymerization medium;

C. Paint cleaning agent.
